From #1 New York Times Bestselling Author Barbara Freethy comes a tale of romance and suspense. Book 2 in the Deception Series (Book 1 is TAKEN)
Christina Alberti, an expert art historian, has run from the shadows of her past, hiding the truth and building her name as a reputable jewelry specialist at the Barclay Auction House. Everything is perfect until a legendary and priceless diamond makes her a target for a diabolically charming con man determined to pull off the heist of the century at her expense.
FBI Agent J.T. McIntyre is determined to catch the thief who conned his father and destroyed his family. He wants revenge as much as he wants justice, and he won't let anyone stand in his way, not even Christina, whose secrets make him wonder just which side she is on.
When the diamond goes missing, the game turns deadly. Christina and J.T. take a dangerous journey deep into a world of greed and desire, secrets and seduction -- until there's no betrayal left hidden and nowhere the shocking truth can hide.
If you missed the first book, be sure to read TAKEN before reading PLAYED!

I enjoyed this, I think more than the first in the series, and I really liked that one. The first one, Taken, I listened to on Audible. This one isn't on Audible, which is rather strange it's not consistent. I read Played on Kindle. There were some parts, esp two, I found not making sense in this. One was where Christina was TOTALLY taken by surprise and shocked ( I cant rem why, not a good reason tho) She took off like she was out of her mind, even running into traffic and almost getting hit. It took quite awhile for her to come to her senses. This was very out of character for her, it didn't make sense at all. The other was when she and JT were driving to the remote farmhouse. I thought they were incredibly stupid not being more careful about Evan perhaps being there! They separated once inside, of course (Spoiler Alert) Evan was there!I truly wish it would have wrapped up about Jenny, how she took the news (Spoiler Alert) of Evans death, and her bro also, from Taken, his name escapes me. The bro went thru SO much re Evan, and I was disappointed because, as far as I saw, he was never mentioned in Played.
The 2 stories, IMHO, should have been more tied together in the 2nd one.
For these reasons, I gave it 4 stars.
I Love Barbara's writing! So happy I discovered her.
I'm anxious to listen to Summer Rain on Audible.

I like the storyline
I loved this book as well as it's prequel - I have read everything by this author and can't wait for more! Her books are full of twists and turns that keep you guessing and surprise you in the end. I have an annoying ability to figure out "who done its" long before they are revealed but Barbara Freethy keeps me up all night ! Write faster please!
This is without a doubt one of the best books I have ever read. Lots of twists and turns to keep up with. The two main characters are interesting in that they surprisingly developed personality changes during the story. Barbara Freethy is a great writer.
I always enjoy reading Barbara Freethy's books. She develops such great, likable, relatable characters. Lots of twists and turns keep the book interesting. Love suspense books that keep me guessing. This is a great read!
I absolutely loved this book!! I read Taken first, loved it! Then could not wait to read this one. Both books were fantastic! You know it's a good book when you just can't put it down. Thank you Barbara for writing such great intriguing love stories!! I have read many Barbara Freethy books and have never been disappointed.
Freethy PLAYED my mind as well.
This is the 2nd of the Deception Series of Freethy and I liked every part of it. I loved the way Freethy created the twists. All along, i was lead on to believe that Evan will succeed in getting the Diamond but in the end, she created a twist that was so unpredictable.
Romance part, however, is SWEETER and more realistic. That is what I liked about Freethy's characters, she makes them realistic to the point that her COUPLES also think about their careers while considering their love and reality to each other.
Im glad its a happy ending and Im sad the series has to end. )
I think the first book I ever read by Barbara Freethy was Summer Secrets. After that, she became a must-buy author for me. I do have a couple of her backlist in my TBR pile, but haven't bought them all yet.
Played is about a jewel theft. The Benedetti diamonds, including a legendary 97-carat yellow diamond, are set to be auctioned by Barclay's auction house in San Francisco, and the night before the auction, they're displayed at a party--worn by art historian Christina Alberti.
Christina is uneasy--she's responsible for the diamond, but hasn't had a chance to examine it personally, and if anything goes wrong, she'll lose the last of her professional reputation--most of it already lost because of her father, notorious thief Marcus Alberti. And that's before FBI agent J. T. McIntyre warns her that the man he's tracking, Evan Chadwick (who first showed up in Taken), is a master of disguise and intends to steal the diamond.
Unfortunately, Christina can't be sure her father won't also be tempted. She wants to trust him, but can't. And J. T.'s suggestion that Marcus might be working with Evan doesn't help.
Of course, the diamond does go missing, impossibly, and J. T. and Christina end up working together, though at somewhat cross purposes, to find it. They fall in love, complicated by suspicion and Christina's need to clear her father's name. And then things turn deadly.
There are wonderful twists and turns in this story, including sleight-of-hand, myriad culprits and motives, family secrets and curses, and both J. T. and Christina have hard choices to make J. T. between love and revenge, and Christina between her father and J. T. Whodunit isn't all that easy, either, and Freethy's talent for complex storylines really shows here.
